How can I get local access to the Internet?
MercerCounty now has several Internet access providers that, depending on where you live, offer local phone numbers. Merlink ® maintains a current list of providers on its Webstuff page.
Merlink ® (officially the Mercer County Free-Net Association) is a group of volunteers who want Mercer County to have an outstanding presence on the World Wide Web. We created the Mercer County homepage that you find at www.merlink.org and continue to add and update information almost daily.
We would also like to provide Internet access for Mercer County residents but to date have been unsuccessful in raising the funds for the equipment needed to provide such access. Therefore, for now, we are concentrating our efforts on keeping Mercer County's homepage current and vibrant.
Free-Nets are perhaps best understood by thinking of a continuum with, for example, CompuServe® at one end and a hobbyist's BBS at the other. Free-Nets occupy a new middle ground between the two. They are multi-user systems with much of the power and sophistication of a commercial online service like CompuServe. Yet each system is locally owned, locally operated, and designed to wrap itself around the information needs of the community.
